The One With… The Inspiration

“Have a great time – take lots of pictures! Pictures help you remember things”, my friend said to me before I headed off for a lengthy holiday in South East Asia.  It got me thinking.  I’m crap with a camera. When I remember it, I never take it out in time to get the ‘inspirational’ shots that the world always craves.  I normally don’t remember it. When I actually get it out of its dusty old bag, the shots come out, well, crap.  I blame the camera (“I NEED a DSLR, how do you expect me to work in these conditions” is my usual indignant reply.)  But we all know it isn’t the tool, it’s my rubbish eye, my rubbish hand and my rubbish artistic flair.

But, I ran a blog last year, alongside two friends, detailing the build up to our big climb up Kilimanjaro, and eventually, I wrote up what happened on the trip.  For me, I felt my words explained to others what I went through more than any poorly angled photo could do.  I’ve been wanting to blog since then, but haven’t really known what my focus could be.

So, although it may seem egotistical to write a blog about what is, essentially, a holiday, I thought I’d use this space to jot down all the random, exciting and downright scary things that happen to us on our holiday.  You see, we (myself and my other half, Mike) aren’t just lounging around a pool for 2 weeks.  We’re off on a 24-day, 4-country, 8-flight-and-a-nightbus epic trip.  London – Bangkok – Cambodia – Vietnam – Bangkok – Mumbai – London. Phew.  I’m currently on some downtime in Hoi An and thought I’d get started, whilst we’re in the luxury of a place with free laptop and free wifi.

Who knows, I may enjoy this so much that I find stuff to blog about in my mundane life after I return. Or it might stop at the end of September. You might all hate it. But at least my memories will be down for me to look back on years to come. (You might be asking why I don’t just keep a journal like a normal person. My handwriting is worse than a doctors, for years I’d be wondering where on earth Uieimam is).

Enjoy…
